Bell Cornwall Recruitment is excited to be recruiting for a highly regarded client seeking a meticulous and proactive Payroll Specialist. This fixed-term role, based in either Birmingham or Norwich, offers a fantastic opportunity to support and manage the payroll function of a leading law firm, ensuring seamless operations and high-quality service.

About the Role:

As a Payroll Specialist, you will work closely with the Payroll Manager and the firm’s HR operations team, managing all aspects of the payroll through their HR and payroll software, People-XD. You will be responsible for delivering the end-to-end payroll process for approximately 1,000 employees, handling around £40 million annually. Your role will also involve extensive administrative tasks and coordination with the Finance team.

Key Responsibilities:

Processing of Payroll:

  • Inputting, processing, and administering all aspects of payroll and benefits, including overtime, tax code changes, starters, leavers, absences, loans, benefits, and salary changes.
  • Assisting with the monthly payroll sign-off, producing reports, BACS salary submissions, and third-party payments.
  • Thoroughly checking payroll to ensure data integrity and addressing any issues with internal and external clients.
  • Liaising with third parties such as HMRC and Benefex, and managing accurate data uploads/exports.
  • Assisting with the tax year-end process, ensuring compliance with timetables and deadlines.
  • Interpreting and applying internal policies and government legislation in payroll transactions.
  • Maintaining payroll processing documentation, spreadsheets, and guidance notes.
  • Supporting the accurate recording and submission of statutory information (e.g., RTI).
  • Handling payroll queries, offering guidance, and making manual pay adjustments as needed.
  • Collaborating with the wider HR team to improve payroll process knowledge and awareness.
  • Supporting the implementation of annual payroll system upgrades and testing new functionalities.

Key Criteria:

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Previous payroll experience or experience in a financial role.
  • Proven history of building strong stakeholder relationships.
  • Excellent analytical skills and proficiency in Microsoft Excel (including formulas, pivot tables, and VLOOKUP).
